Is Thai Bodywork a massage?

Often referred to as "Thai Massage," Thai Bodywork is like a massage in that it uses techniques to help relax the muscles and alleviate pain or discomfort. However, Thai Bodywork involves much more movement, focusing more on stretching and joint mobilization to achieve its final goal. It also takes into consideration energy balancing to further encourage healing. Unlike traditional western massages, Thai Bodywork is performed on a mat on the floor, there are no oils or lotions, and the client is fully clothed. To get a better idea, watch this brief demo video. It's a unique healing experience that has been a part of traditional Thai medicine for over 2,000 years, and we are so lucky to now have the chance to experience it for ourselves!

What can I expect from a Thai Bodywork session?

During your session, I will be using a variety of techniques to help stretch your muscles, release tension, and increase range-of-motion. Your session will take place on a thick mat on the floor. I will be doing all of the work; your only job is to relax your muscles and your mind. I may ask you to contract and release certain muscle groups in order to stretch more deeply. I will ask where you are feeling a stretch or how the pressure is. I encourage you to communicate with me if something is hurting or if we could take the stretch deeper, even if I do not ask you first (don't be shy!). Your cooperation and communication are key in helping you receive the best Thai Bodywork session you can.

How should I prepare for my session? What should I wear?

Please complete the intake form before your session so we can jump right in. Wear something that you can comfortably move in: workout or yoga clothes tend to be the best option. As Thai Bodywork is quite up close and personal, I ask that you please not come to your session following a workout or other sweaty activity- clean and dry create the most comfortable conditions for healing :)

Back to FAQS

I have an injury; can I receive Thai Bodywork?

Certainly! Thai Bodywork can be very therapeutic in helping to heal injuries. Please indicate on the intake form if you have any injuries so I can work with you accordingly. Communication is essential!

While many injuries can greatly benefit from Thai Bodywork, some severe ailments should not be tampered with. Some examples include acute injuries (less than 72 hours old), if you've had a recent surgery, stitches, or severe back problems (such as disc issues). If you are unsure if your injury would be aggravated by Thai Bodywork, please contact me before scheduling and we can discuss it to ensure that you stay safe, happy, and healthy!

Back to FAQS

I'm not flexible!

This could be considered more of a "Frequently Stated Unnecessary Concern," but FSUC doesn't have quite the same ring to it. It is not necessary to be flexible to enjoy the benefits of Thai Bodywork! I will work with your body to make sure that you are never pushed beyond your limits. We live in a chronically rigid society, which is all the more reason to be a recipient of Thai Bodywork! Much like yoga, flexibility tends to be a result of Thai Bodywork, rather than a prerequisite. Regular sessions will help you increase your flexibility and range of motion so that this can be one item to check off your FSUC list.
